HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL

Founded in Kona on the Big Island of Hawai'i in 1984, The Hawaiian Islands School of Massage (HISM) began as a 100-hour pre-apprenticeship training program. Lynn and Peter Wind acquired the school in 1988 and brought to Hawai'i their vision of a comprehensive, holistic and scientifically-oriented massage training program based on the principles and rigor of Canadian Medical Massage.

In 1989, the Winds aided the State of Hawaii Board of Massage by addressing the need for higher standards and stricter guidelines in massage education requirements and industry regulations.

Over the years, the curriculum has evolved into a truly unique integration of personal growth and advanced therapeutic skills. The Hawaiian Islands School of Massage has gained a reputation as one of the country's most outstanding and progressive schools, in education and medical massage training.

PHILOSOPHY

The Hawaiian Islands School of Massage's philosophy is based on integration, unity and balance. We are dedicated to providing an environment conductive to learning the realization of personal, spiritual and intellectual goals; and to discovery.

We are committed to teaching our students superior skills through a program based on intensive study of Medical Massage combined with comprehensive training in anatomy, kinesiology and physiology.

HISM embraces and supports educational excellence for each student as well as those whose lives will be touched by our graduates. We envision Medical Massage Therapy as an integral and respected component of the health care profession worldwide.
