Curriculum Overview | Japanese Language Program |
We have spent over two decades refining our curriculum into an innovative link between scientific soft-tissue rehabilitation and intuitive holistic health care. HISM provides a nurturing environment in which HISM knowledge can unfold and become balanced by spirit and intellect, allowing you to begin your career integrated and able. Foundational skills and the variety of techniques offered allow each student to create their unique professional approach. Our program is noted for being both innovative and unique. HISM is deeply committed to not only your personal achievement, but also to the growth and improvement of the massage profession. HISM graduates are enjoying 100% passing rate on the Hawaii State Board Exam.

As the only Dept of Education approved school on the west side of the Big Island, the Hawaiian Islands School of Massage offers innovative massage therapy training programs in Integrative Medical Massage. The Integrative Medical Massage Program was developed by Lynn Wind, director and owner of HISM. It offers a unique and integrated approach to body work and is offered in no other single curriculum. While most other schools and programs teach therapeutic or general massage, over two decades of study and teaching experience has led to the creation of this unique method of corrective treatment. It is based upon scientific-based European and Canadian rehabilitation techniques designed to reduce pain, re-establish normalization of myofascial tissue tone, improve joint mechanics and create a positive tissue homeostasis and normal health function of the musculoskeletal system.

The applied manual techniques delivered to an anatomic-specific region are a compilation of soft tissue restorative massage, myofascial/joint assessments and releases, passive and active neuromuscular stretching, palpation and range of motion. Integrated with hydrotherapy, aromatherapy, reflexology, lymphatic draining and other therapeutic exercises, these techniques embody nature's process to enhance the individual's well-being.

This hands on based system of Integrative Medical Massage requires a thorough understanding of the scientific principles of normal anatomy, physiology as well as abnormal mechanics and pathology, encompassing assessment and documentation skills to affect healing and the treatment needs of the client, as well as the requirements of insurance companies. Along with the scientific method, the student also receives the understanding of how to tune into the client's condition and state, listen to the client's issues, and work with nature's rhythms to develop a truly unique treatment program specifically geared for the particular situation.

Upon completion of the program, the Integrative Medical Massage Therapist is educated and trained in the principles of the art and science of using one's physical (hands), mental (scientific body of knowledge) and spiritual (intuition) abilities to assess normal tissue tension in muscles, fascia, ligaments and joints, apply this method of corrective techniques. HISM believes this investment into oneself provides the guidance and instruction that will remain with the therapist throughout their career and provide strength within their practice. Not only will the HISM therapist develop high-earning potential, but also create longevity and excellence in the massage therapy profession without additional schooling upon graduation.
We offer full-time and part-time programs with three enrollments throughout the year.
