Visiting hawaii | Moving to Hawaii | Housing & Transportation
This area offers a wide variety of housing options. The “up-countryEliving style offers options like one-room coffee shacks, studios, cottages and ohanas (in-law unit), and houses to share with roommates. The school maintains a housing information bulletin board for students seeking to share housing with other students or community members. Because the school is located up-country, access to a car, motorcycle or moped is recommended. Public Transportation is minimal, but students frequently set up carpools since the area is relatively small. Once an applicant submits their enrollment deposit, the school will provide a list of private providers with which HISM has a pre-arranged relationship with.

Transportation on the island is limited in public transportation. There is one main highway around the island and is one lane each way. It is very mountainous here, and so, is not very conducive to biking or walking. There is a public bus, but it runs only once around the island daily. It is free, but it is slow! The best suggestion is to either ship a car here if you have one already for approximately $1000 or buy an affordable car or scooter, of which there are plenty.

To begin any housing, transportation or job hunting, one of the only ways is through our newspaper, The West Hawaii Today.
