Visiting hawaii | Moving to Hawaii | Housing & Transportation
When moving to Hawaii, there are many options available and it does take some time figure out exactly where, what and how is compatible to your particular lifestyle.
The Big Island has a range of living situations that one can find in a myriad of combinations. The best place to start looking is the west side Big Island newspaper, West Hawaii Today (www.westhawaiitoday.com)
Once you arrive here, then you can start looking at the local community bulletin boards.
Types of Engagements
Leases are usually 6 months to a year and many opportunities to be month-to-month. Pets are difficult to find housing for. If you have a dog, expect to pay a pet deposit and a limit to your options.
1) Work-trade/barter engagements
These are hard to come by, and when they do come up, its mostly through word of mouth and referrals. If they are posted to the public, they get snatched up very quickly. Moving quickly on these and having a wealthy knowledge of landscaping, estate management, farming or handywork gives you an edge, but there are a lot of people already here that know many trades and crafts.
2) Apartments/Condos
Studios can usually found for $500 and up. Traditional 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments and condos ranging on price depending on how close to Kailua town center and by the beach or water. Generally, 1-bedrooms start at $600 plus tax, utilities and up.

Sometimes, a house is many times split between upper and lower floors. These generally are 1, 2, or 3 bedrooms and run between $800 and up.
3) Ohanas/In-laws
Guest houses on a larger estates and properties that are usually stand-alone studio units starting at $700 plus tax, utilities and up.
4) Coffee shacks and farms
South of Kailua-Kona, South Kona offers a luscious option to the heat of town. Land of coffee and fruit farms, there are opportunities to live a more rustic lifestyle up the mountains of Holualoa and Hualalai. These neighbors consist of Kainaliu, Holulua, Hualalai, Keahou, Honalo, Kealakekua, and Captain Cook.
